    • Write, rewrite, read aloud and rewrite again
    • Proofread carefully
    • Rewrites available for four (R)

  • First Assignment
    • Letter to instructor
      • Introduce yourself
      • Limit to 400 words (+/- 40, or 10%)
      • Include your full name name
      • List three issues affecting ALS organizations
      • Due Jan. 21 at 11:59 p.m.

  • Issues
    • A contestable point, a difference of opinion regarding fact, value, or policy.
      • For us, issues that concern science

  • Letters

    • Style
      • Formal business letter
      • Conversational: first, second, third person
        • Emphasis on reader (and editor’s readers)
        • Avoid bureaucratic phrasing

    • Format
      • Letterhead:
        • Return address: Sender’s identity and address (not your name)
      • Date
      • Inside address
        • Recipient's full name and address
      • Salutation
        • Honorific and surname
        • Use colon rather than comma
      • Body
        • Lead and 3 C's
        • First, second, third person
      • Complimentary close
        • Flush left or aligned with inside address or feature of letterhead
      • Name
        • With signature above (allow three linespaces)
